Note to Reader: The videos in this series were captured during my 1,000-mile hiking quest in the summer of 2024. You can read more about that journey in my upcoming book The Woman on the Ferry: A Journey of 1,000 Miles to Redefine Success and Discover Joy.
As I wrapped up the final leg of my 1,000-mile hike, I found myself in deserted campgrounds, baking in the relentless September heat. I had just come from the cooler air of Oregon, and now, under the searing California sun, I questioned my decision to stay. But with my winter home set in Southern California, there was no escaping the heat.
My GPS initially pointed me toward McClure Point Recreation Area, but a quick check revealed my true destination—Horseshoe Bend Campground—was still 30 minutes away. The drive led me down an unmarked dirt road, and with my fingers crossed, I eventually rolled into camp. From my perch, I was treated to a breathtaking view of Lake McClure, cradled by the Sierra Nevada foothills in Mariposa County.
The lake was low, exposing sunbaked islands that begged to be explored. A red-tailed hawk eyed me from a telephone wire, while deer grazed peacefully in the meadow. Some mornings, the lake lay perfectly still, reflecting the sky like a sheet of glass—nature’s own mirror, holding its breath between whispers of wind.
In this video, I invite you to pause, close your eyes, and let the sound of gentle waves carry you away. Find your moments of peace, wherever you are.
