The Quiet Tides of Eastman Lake

Raymond, California

Note to Reader: The videos in this series were captured during my 1,000-mile hiking quest in the summer of 2024. You can read more about that journey in my upcoming book The Woman on the Ferry: A Journey of 1,000 Miles to Redefine Success and Discover Joy.

I rolled into the Codorniz Campground at the Eastman Lake Corps of Engineers recreation area in October, with less than 30 miles to go before reaching mile 1,000. It was Week 21 of my quest, and this was where I would cross the finish line.

On that final hike, I crossed Buchanan Dam, winding through hillsides brushed with golden oats. At mile 999, a roadrunner—the first I’d seen all year—darted in front of me. I watched it leap onto a boulder, as if cheering me on.

The view from mile 1,000!

I made a few small loops, searching for the perfect overlook, and then—click—the app rolled over to 1,000 miles. On Day 144, I wrapped up my quest at 1,003.2 miles, averaging seven miles a day. Mission accomplished! And wow, what an adventure. From the gorgeous Pacific Crest Trail in Southern California to the tranquil community parks of Gabriola Island in British Columbia, and everywhere in between, I’d witnessed sights that most people only dream of.

Whatever your quest—whether it’s regaining the strength to walk to the corner, running a marathon, or writing a book—it all starts with a single step, a single page, a single action. Dream big. It’s never too late.
