Listen to the Sound of Red Rock Falls

Sierra National Forest, California
1

Note to Reader: The videos in this series were captured during my 1,000-mile hiking quest in the summer of 2024. You can read more about that journey in my upcoming book The Woman on the Ferry: A Journey of 1,000 Miles to Redefine Success and Discover Joy.

I’d driven past the sign for the Lewis Creek National Scenic Trail several times on my way to Yosemite National Park. But with temperatures soaring into the triple digits, an early morning hike felt like the perfect escape. I set out eager to discover the surprises this trail might hold.

My first challenge came quickly—crossing Lewis Creek with only a rope strung from tree to tree for support. I carefully stepped from rock to rock, grateful to keep my feet dry. On the other side, the trail unfolded like a lush, green tunnel, framed by ferns and shaded by towering evergreens and dogwoods.

At the 1.5-mile mark, I arrived at Red Rock Falls, where cool water cascaded over smooth stones. A group of young women were already there, enjoying the falls’ misty spray and the respite from the heat. Eventually, I found a moment alone, capturing 60 seconds of pure nature—the gentle rush of water, the whisper of leaves. It felt timeless.

The falls are a favorite cooling spot for locals, and on my trek back, I exchanged cheerful greetings with families headed out for a picnic, their laughter mingling with the sounds of the forest. After all, it was the Fourth of July week—a celebration of independence and the simple joys of summer.

These hidden gems are scattered across this vast nation—if you know where to look. Whether it’s a desert oasis, a wildflower meadow, a waterfall, or just a little slice of heaven that speaks to you, they’re waiting.

Today, I encourage you to step outside and discover your own little reprieve. Let nature remind you of life’s simple wonders.
